'Fantastic' Kayden spends all his pocket money in Asda helping Dundee Foodbank

When nine-year-old Kayden Smith joins his grandma Denise on regular shopping trips to our Dundee Kirkton store he uses all his £5 pocket money to buy things for the local foodbank.

Our colleagues at the store were so moved by his kindness they invited him in for a special store tour and to meet the manager of Dundee Foodbank. The store’s community champion Sam Will arranged a treat for Kayden as a thank you. Read more

Helping at adult learning class

I was so glad to be back at one of my community centres classes. In this class we teach parents and carers ways to be creative with household arts and crafts to play and interact with their babies and toddlers. We use everyday items that are inexpensive. Sometimes we get messy and all the kids love it! It can be very therapeutic creating artwork. Myself and Carol, the adult learning coordinator, prepare everything needed for the projects before they arrive. When everyone is in we sit and sing a few songs and read a new story. Once we begin the craft activities, everyone sits around the table and chat with each other. We offer support and advice which some mum's have found invaluable. Lonely parents have come to the class and made new friends in similar situations. It is a great way to socialise and stimulate your baby's brain as well as feeling you belong.

Donation to Togs for Tots

Togs for Tots Dundee are a small charity that help struggling families with everything you need for children. They often help those who are most in need or most vulnerable, such as parents who have escaped a bad domestic situation or young girls who have had a baby and have no one to help with the essentials. They rely on donations of used but in good condition clothing, toys and nursery equipment. But they always give brand new underwear and bedding for hygiene reasons. I heard they were running low so I invited them in to choose what they needed to help them continue to provide this brilliant service in my community. Keep up the good work ladies!

Hope for after-school club after break-in

A big thank you to all our generous customers and colleagues who supported a collection in our store for Spectrum, an after-school club for autistic children whose shed has been burgled. The shed was bought with their green token winnings last year. Along with some outdoor equipment, toys and seating were strewn across the garden and destroyed. It turned my stomach, so we decided to hold a little collection to help with some damage repairs or toys. As myself and a playworker from Spectrum started the collection, many customers had already heard the local news and they too were disgusted. Our first donation was from a lady who was retired but had worked with autistic children during her career. She popped a £20 note into our bucket and wished us luck. January is never a good month to do a collection as money is tight for the majority of our community. But instead, we had offers of help with repairs and also a cctv system to deter it from happening again. Others asked what toys were needed and said they would purchase and deliver it straight to the charity. After two hours we had also collected £212! All in all we had a great response that day and hope it went some way to making up for the heartache of mindless vandalism. Thank you!

Happy Burns Day

What a fantastic afternoon we had in our store for Burns Day! Customers and colleagues were entertained by the fantastic Farquarson Brothers, Ewan and Murray. They're both partially deaf and blind, but they don't let it hold them back. They use the service of Sense Scotland, so they often apply their musical skills to raise much-needed funds for the charity. A few of our colleagues showed their support by donning their tartan clothing for the day. Thanks boys – outstanding as always!
