Welcome to Asda Ystalyfera

Hello! My name is Sherry Cook and I am the Store Manager of your Asda store in Ystalyfera. You will find everything you need for your full weekly shop at great low prices and served with the unique Asda personality. We also offer our In Store Collection service which means you can order products from AsdaDirect.com or George.com, have them delivered to the store and then pick them up at your convenience, free of charge. I look forward along with all of our colleagues to welcoming you to the store.

Little Alexa Burke loves her George jumpsuit so much she never wants to take it off – so her mum Tanya was desperate when she found out it had been discontinued and she couldn’t buy any replacements.

She posted an appeal on Facebook and when our colleagues spotted it they worked together to track down the last three remaining samples at our supplier’s factory in India.

Lisa Wilkinson from our Hessle store in Hull handed them over when Tanya and Alexa came in to do their regular shop. Four-year-old Alexa has non-verbal autism and a range of other health issues – and Tanya said: “What Asda have done is brilliant. Alexa is so happy – and so am I!”

These handy Happy Little Helpers shopping lists are now available in more than 300 of our larger stores to make trips to the supermarket less stressful for autistic children.

Happy Little Helpers at Asda

They were created by our brilliant Middlesbrough colleague Jenny Barnett, whose five-year-old son Charlie has non-verbal autism, to keep children interested and engaged during their shopping trips.

Jenny’s colourful shopping list shows a range of shopping choices such as milk, bread and bananas that the child can tick off once they’ve been added to the trolley. She came up with the idea after seeing how Charlie’s school uses symbols and pictures to help him communicate.

There were smiles all round when our Barnes Hill store’s community champion Katey Titley handed over the keys to a new minibus to Cerebral Palsy Midlands.

Katey with the group and the minibus

Katey volunteers with the charity each week and helped secure a £15,000 donation from the Asda Foundation to pay for the minibus.

Sarah Lilly, Development Officer at Cerebral Palsy Midlands, said the minibus will help members of staff transport people to GP appointments, do the shopping, go on trips and get to and from the Cerebral Palsy Midlands centre.

Four of our community champions from the North East were on hand to support some of the thousands of runners who took part in the Great North Run.

Colleagues helping out

Lynn Ivison from our Gateshead store joined Maureen Wallwork from Washington, Mel Foster from Benton and Michelle Castledine from Gosforth to cheer on the athletes.

They then joined volunteers from St Oswald’s Hospice to offer the runners much-needed refreshments and book them in for massages after they’d crossed the finishing line.

Congratulations to proud parents Laura Street and Nick Jones who are celebrating the birth of baby Otis George after he made an unexpected entrance to the world in the car park of our Aylesbury store!

The family outside the store

Laura and Nick were on their way to the neighbouring Stoke Mandeville Hospital after popping into the store for a bite to eat – but didn’t get that far before her waters broke. Colleagues and customers rushed to help, and Otis was safely born weighing a healthy 8lb 3oz.
