Our Bromborough store has trialled a successful ‘Quiet Hour’ to help autistic customers and others who struggle with loud noises.

The store turned off the music, escalators and televisions, dimmed the lights and handed out maps of the store to make the shopping experience more comfortable for guests from Autism Together.

The store’s community champion Helen-Louise Sestan-Burton regularly helps the group and invited members including volunteer Alex, who’s autistic himself, to do their weekly shop during the trial.

Happy birthday to our oldest colleague Tom Brogan who’s 92 today!

Tom helps regular customer Margaret

Tom, a porter at our Wigan store, says he has no plans to retire as he loves meeting and helping regular customers like Margaret Barker, who had a stroke last year and needs a mobility scooter to get out and shop now.

Margaret, 66, said: “When I came back after my stroke everyone was really helpful but Tom stuck out. He always has a smile on his face and will do anything to help you – he’s such a nice gentleman. For 92 he’s unbelievable really.”

Our bakery colleague Gary Gordon has struck up a great friendship with 85-year-old customer Audrey Bond, a keen baker herself who comes in to our Barking store every week and passes on some of her fantastic tips.

She’s helped him improve her favourite product – tiger chest bread – and she often brings in home-baked goodies for the team.

Gary says: “I never got the chance to meet my grandparents so I call Audrey my grandma. When she turns up I stop what I’m doing and give her my full attention – she’s wonderful.”

Thanks to Audrey’s advice, he says his tiger chest bread is now “as good as you can get”.

Colleagues at our stores have been hosting Pudsey’s Teddy Bears picnics for BBC Children in Need – and some kids have even met Pudsey Bear himself, just like little Rylee at our Wheatley store.

Rylee, who’s seven, can become upset when he hears loud noises – so the store’s community champion Angie Young gave him lots of goodies to host his own party with his teddy bears at home.

Making sure our products are the best possible quality is really important to us – especially when it comes to our Little Angels range, which millions of parents trust to use on their babies. That’s why every element of the range is rigorously tested for safety and quality.

When we received reports of a small baby potentially having a serious reaction to one of our newborn nappies we took immediate steps to investigate what had happened. We took the precautionary measure of removing the nappies from sale and sent samples to two separate labs for testing.

These independent tests involved taking samples from the various sections that make up a nappy, breaking them down and then analysing the sample to detect the presence of any substances that would be a cause for concern.

Since we took that decision I have been absolutely focussed on investigating the quality of our nappies.
