We’ve developed a selection of delicious Christmas recipes that are sure to go down a treat at any festive feast.

Salmon and bacon pancakes

Our innovation chefs have come up with a range of recipes using some of our favourite Extra Special products, including a brilliant breakfast dish, tasty canapés, the main meal, and delicious desserts.

We gave people the chance to try some of the recipes at Taste of London in our Extra Special festive lodge. See what they thought of them, and give them a try for yourself this Christmas:

Our Food Innovation Head Chef Mark Richmond offers some advice for taking the stress out of cooking this Christmas.

1. Cooking for large numbers can be overwhelming, so planning is key. To keep Christmas overspend and waste down, be realistic about what people will eat so that you don’t cook too much. This will also save you time. Top tip if oven space is limited is to always write a plan for cooking times so you are not panicking towards the serve time.

Fig and brandy parcels

2. Using up leftovers doesn’t have to be boring, for example, with a few simple stock cupboard ingredients and filo pastry, our Extra Special Fig & Brandy Christmas Pudding is transformed into delicious sweet filo parcels which are perfect for Boxing Day snacking.

We love this brilliant Nightmare Before Christmas cake design that was created by Kirsty Pointon using an Asda three-tier cake!

Kirsty works part time as a Customer Service Colleague at our West Swindon store and was trained as a chef but left the world of kitchens behind after having her second child.

After a busy week Kirsty realised she didn’t have time to make her own cake for her husband Andrew’s 40th birthday so she decided to pick one up from Asda instead. Her design idea was inspired by The Nightmare Before Christmas as her husband and daughters are big fans of the movie.

We’ve got a wonderful army of Asda elves out and about this Christmas spreading festive cheer and arranging special surprises for people in the local community.

Asda community elves

The #becauseitschristmas elves are better known throughout the rest of the year as our Community Life Champions. Every Asda store has one, and they play an active role in their local community, working with schools, charities and other good causes.

Throughout December you’ll see them in their “Happy to Elf” uniforms bringing a bit of festive magic to people who deserve some extra special Christmas cheer.

They’ll be organising get-togethers for senior citizens and people who live on their own in the local community; they’ll be throwing Christmas parties for groups who just don’t have the money to fund celebrations; and they’ll be saying thank you to some of the amazing people who give up their time to volunteer for local good causes.

We’re pleased to announce our commitment to source 93% of our bananas from Rainforest Alliance Certified™ farms by March 2016.

Alongside our Fairtrade banana range we’ll source bananas from farms certified to the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) Standard, which guarantees the fruit comes from trusted and sustainable suppliers.

This decision allows us to help with the long-term social and environmental support of banana farmers in Central America.
