Cheque for a Christmas event in the local community

Community Champion Claire Gager helped a local community event start their Christmas celebrations. Avondale Community Events were presented with a cheque from the Asda Foundation for £540 which provided local families with festive cheer, entertainment, fun activities and a visit and present from Santa! The event was finalised with children being able to decorate the community Christmas tree with their own baubles and the lights were switched on, with carol singing and refreshments to warm everyone up outside.

Here’s the wonderful 102-year-old Jean McCullagh enjoying her first visit to her local Asda in Larne after our colleague Catherine McCallion got to know her through a charity knitting group they both attend.

Jean and Catherine

Jean told Catherine, who’s the store’s Community Champion, she’d love to come in to shop in the store – so Catherine arranged a VIP visit.

Jean, who has five children and is a great-grandma, still lives independently but her mobility has been restricted after breaking her hip so she uses a wheelchair.

Jean thoroughly enjoyed her shopping trip and said: “It was lovely – I would love to come back again!”

She meant to buy one green chilli – but instead filled in ‘one’ in the weight category, meaning she ordered one kilogram of thin green chillies costing £4.10.

Wonky veg box

They’ve just been named Product of the Year for Healthy Food – voted for by UK consumers.

We’ve sold 120,000 boxes of the misshapen veg as part of our mission to cut food waste. They contain 5kg of fresh produce – carrots, potatoes, peppers, cucumber, cabbage, leeks, parsnips and onions – and at £3.50 per box they’re 30% cheaper than standard lines. The exact contents will depend on the season.
