Local Hospice receives Asda Foundation grant

Treetops Hospice Care have been successful in receiving an Asda Foundation grant for £1000. They will use the grant to help fund hearing loop equipment for the day centre. Treetops are a pleasure to work with and the equipment will make a huge difference and open up the day centre for more people to get involved.

Local Impact Grant for Long Eaton Junior Netball Club

Susan Allan from the Long Eaton Junior Netball Club contacted me a few months ago asking if they could come and bag pack in our store to raise some much-needed money for equipment for the club. After meeting and sitting down with Susan to talk about what she needed funding for, I suggested applying for one of our Local impact grants for sports. Susan explained to me that although the team pay a small fee each week, this only covers the cost of court hire and competition entrance fees but leaves very little for much-needed equipment. On top of this the club have set up a scheme to get some more mature players involved to help promote the importance of keeping fit and exercise regardless of age. I gave our simple form to Susan, who then returned it to me at the store. A few weeks later I was delighted to give Susan the news that the grant had been approved and I would have a cheque for £2,000 on its way to her soon. I went along to the training session of the club last Sunday and presented them with the funds and snapped a few photos while I was there. It was great to meet the teams and some of the parents – I will be going back in the new season to see how they have spent the grant.

Supporting Parkinson's UK in-store

When the Long Eaton branch of Parkinson's UK asked if we could support them with Parkinson's awareness week, we were delighted to oblige. We had them in our store with awareness stands and a bucket collection along with bag packing. The event has been amazing with lots of other groups in our community joining them and showing support from the Imari Ladies Choir, who were singing in our lobby to local school children offering up the weekend to bag pack and give Nordic walking demonstrations outside, creating some real community spirit. This makes me really proud to be the Community Champion at our store and having the opportunity to bring our community together and support such a great cause.  The event has been a huge success.

Asda Foundation support Long Eaton Carnival Committee with donation

The Long Eaton Carnival Committee received a cheque for £1000.00 – thanks to the Asda Foundation local impact grant they applied for. The team came into store for a photo and presentation of the cheque with store manager Fausto Lallo. The funds will help with the huge cost of putting on the carnival which is a major event in the Long Eaton community every year. The funding will help with the rising costs of the marque hire needed for the event which continues in West Park after the floats have been through the town. Tim, centre of picture, applied for the grant after talking to the community champion Jon Walker at the Long Eaton store, who suggested that a local impact grant could help with the rising costs of the event. Jon said "The carnival is the biggest event that happens in our town and really brings the community together for a great day out. They don't get any funding and work really hard to make this happen each year – so it's really nice that we where able to help out"

Ten-year-old Leon fell in love with our Lovable Huggable Panda when he saw it in our Hunts Cross store in Liverpool – but his mum said he’d have to wait until her next payday.

Colleagues reuniting Leon with Pandy

He found an empty cardboard box, popped the panda inside it and quietly wrote a message on the box: “My mum didn’t have enough money to buy me Pandy so she’s buying me Pandy on 15th June so please don’t buy him as it will make me cry. Thank you so much from hopeful future owner.”

Our colleagues at the store were so moved when section leader David Bateman found the message they clubbed together to buy Pandy – and put out an appeal on Facebook to track down his “future owner”.

Lots of people shared David’s appeal, including the Liverpool Echo – and Leon’s mum Debbie Ashworth spotted their post when she was flicking through her Facebook feed.

She took Leon back into the store – and there were smiles all round when Pandy was handed over.
