George sponsored the Bollywood-style scene

We are all very proud of our colleague Ruth Scholefield who took to the catwalk at this year’s Breast Cancer Care Fashion Show. It was an amazing evening and one that we’re delighted to support.

All of the 32 models at the fundraising event have had breast cancer or are undergoing treatment for breast cancer. They were modelling outfits from High Street retailers, including George at Asda, and were styled by fashion editor Hilary Alexander.

For Ruth the show marked the start of a year of celebrations. Next year will be her tenth wedding anniversary to husband Philip, her own 40th birthday and her son’s 18th birthday. And on 6th September 2016 she will pass another special milestone – she will have been cancer-free for five years and will have beaten breast cancer … not once but twice!

Now that the new carrier bag charges are in force in England a few customers have been asking where the money will be going.

Carrier bag charges

We’ve teamed up with Iceland, Morrisons and Waitrose to pledge that the proceeds from the new 5p carrier bag charges in England will fund the construction of a new world class dementia research centre.

Building the new centre is a £350 million project and is £100 million short of its target. It is hoped money from the carrier bag charges across all four retailers could meet this shortfall. Andy Clarke, our chief exec, will be writing to other retailers to ask for their support too.

The carrier bag levy came into force in England on Monday 5th October – law requires all major retailers to charge customers a minimum of 5p for single use carrier bags to help reduce waste. This law was already in force in Northern Ireland, Wales and Scotland where shoppers are already used to paying the 5p charge.
