Therapy dog visits Asda Crewe

Sheli from Creative Action called in with one of the group's therapy dogs to collect a cheque for £200 from our general store manager Mike after finishing as runners-up in our latest in-store Green Token Giving customer vote. Creative Action work with children with the help of their animals – they have dogs, sheep, ponies and horses. The animals help the children to concentrate and sometimes to keep them calm. The dog is a sproc – a cross between a Cocker and Springer Spaniel. He has regular training sessions and loves his treats but knows when it's work time. He's been taught to look into the child's eyes, which dogs don't really like to do, which helps the child to do the same.

Friends for Leisure receive Asda Foundation donation

Green Token Giving winners Friends for Leisure came into store for the presentation of their cheque of £500. Pictured with me are Gillian Jones from the group and Mike our GSM. The charity works with disabled children and young people aged 5-21 years taking them on activities. The money will fund bowling on a Saturday morning for these children giving them interaction with other children and fun along the way. Gillian would like to thank every customer who voted.

Ten-year-old Leon fell in love with our Lovable Huggable Panda when he saw it in our Hunts Cross store in Liverpool – but his mum said he couldn’t have it until her next payday.

Colleagues reuniting Leon with Pandy

He found an empty cardboard box, popped the panda inside it and quietly wrote a message on the box: “My mum didn’t have enough money to buy me Pandy so she’s buying me Pandy on 15th June so please don’t buy him as it will make me cry. Thank you so much from Hopeful Future Owner.”

Our colleagues at the store were so moved when section leader David Bateman found the message they clubbed together to buy Pandy – and put out an appeal on Facebook to track down his “future owner”.

Lots of people shared David’s appeal, including the Liverpool Echo – and Leon’s mum Debbie Ashworth spotted their post when she was flicking through her Facebook feed.

She took Leon back into the store – and there were smiles all round when Pandy was handed over.

Four-year-old Charlie has non-verbal autism and always found shopping an overwhelming experience – until his mum Jenny came up with a simple visual aid that keeps him interested and engaged on his trips to Asda.

Charlie and Jenny

Jenny Barnett, who works at our Middlesbrough store, was inspired by the way Charlie’s school uses symbols and pictures to help him communicate. So she came up with a velcro-backed visual shopping list showing lots of different items.

Now her picture sheets – available at the store’s customer service desk – are helping to make the weekly shop less stressful for other shoppers and their children.
