Collecting for the homeless

Asda Bodmin's trolley gift appeal was for St Petroc's Society for the Homeless. We managed to fill seven boxes from the most wonderful customers and colleagues in and around Bodmin. The boxes were filled with blankets and food and toiletries and even some dog food – all needed. Pictured here is Community Champion Jackki Lavender handing over the boxes to Andy Sealey from St. Petroc's.

Bodmin Carnival Committee are Hidden Heroes

We decided our Hidden Heroes were the Bodmin Carnival Committee, who after a break of ten years resurrected Bodmin Carnival. The ladies organised everything included the funding for a very special Bodmin event. The Asda Foundation gave grants for the Picnic in the Park (a fundraising and awareness event for the carnival), and for the Carnival itself. These ladies, lead by Lorraine, worked hard to put on a very special Carnival, may there be many more to come. Pictures here of them being invited to receive their badges and we put on a buffet to say thank you. Our GSM, Amanda popped in to say thank you and hand out the badges.

Here’s the wonderful 102-year-old Jean McCullagh enjoying her first visit to her local Asda in Larne after our colleague Catherine McCallion got to know her through a charity knitting group they both attend.

Jean and Catherine

Jean told Catherine, who’s the store’s Community Champion, she’d love to come in to shop in the store – so Catherine arranged a VIP visit.

Jean, who has five children and is a great-grandma, still lives independently but her mobility has been restricted after breaking her hip so she uses a wheelchair.

Jean thoroughly enjoyed her shopping trip and said: “It was lovely – I would love to come back again!”

Student Lizzie Brown has been inundated with recipe ideas on social media after she accidentally bought one kilo of chillies instead of just one single chilli.

The first year drama student at the University of East Anglia was putting together her Asda online shop and filled in ‘quantity’ for all of her items – apart from chillies.

She meant to buy one green chilli – but instead filled in ‘one’ in the weight category, meaning she ordered one kilogram of thin green chillies costing £4.10.

More of our hugely popular wonky veg boxes are due to arrive in selected stores today.
Wonky veg box

They’ve just been named Product of the Year for Healthy Food – voted for by UK consumers.

We’ve sold 120,000 boxes of the misshapen veg as part of our mission to cut food waste. They contain 5kg of fresh produce – carrots, potatoes, peppers, cucumber, cabbage, leeks, parsnips and onions – and at £3.50 per box they’re 30% cheaper than standard lines. The exact contents will depend on the season.
